Elementary G. 1 – 4 Curriculum
Based on American textbook lessons that foster broad background knowledge and professional English skills, Groton offers advanced writing classes across all levels through its unique Critical & Creative Writing program.
1. Literature & Response Writing
In-depth lessons on literature, history, science, personalities, and culture using Journeys American textbooks. Each week, students are given a writing topic linked to the learned content, discussed during class, and submitted as a written response.
2. Themed Writing
Writing lessons linked to the Journeys literature textbook. Students engage in various types of writing, such as descriptive, dialogue, fictional, news reports, informational, explanatory, and problem-solution essays. Through modeling with the teacher and independent review, students complete and revise their essays.
3. Speech & Debate
Using essays from Themed Writing classes, students engage in speech presentations or debate practice. This involves a structured writing process from brainstorming to final draft, culminating in the presentation of their scripts.
4. Vocabulary & Sentence Writing
Students learn essential vocabulary for their grade level and apply it in writing exercises linked to workbooks. Regular Vocabulary Contests encourage thorough review.
5. Grammar & Paragraph Writing
After learning grammar concepts, students apply them accurately in writing practice, linking grammar study with writing review.
6. Science & Report Writing
Students acquire knowledge in physical, life, and earth sciences, motivating learning through experiments and activities. Follow-up report writing integrates knowledge acquisition, science activities, and summary skills.
7. Novel & Creative Writing
By reading required and recommended books, students naturally acquire essential vocabulary and sentence structure. Creative and unrestrained writing activities help develop free and imaginative writing skills.
